Why you should wake up before your kids

One of the things I hear all the time is; ‘I just wish I had some time for myself.’ And I get that, as a mom we are constantly on the go. But can I tell you an easy way to get alone time? Wake up before your kid! Yes, it’s that easy. Let me explain!
You will have alone time first thing in the morning!
One of my favourite reasons to wake up before your kids, is because it will set you up for success. You start your day by yourself and focussed on getting yourself ready. This is huge for your mental health. You don’t wake up being needed immediately.
Another thing I love about waking up early, is that not only your kids are still asleep, but so is the rest of the world. Nobody will call you at 6am, because they are probably still in bed. You truly get time to be quiet, because the world is quiet.
In the 5am club, Robin Sharma talks about the benefits of waking up at 5am. Now, it doesn’t mean you need to wake up at 5am, but the principles he teaches are worth reading the book for!
How long?
Now one of the first things that might come to mind is how much earlier that needs to be? And honestly, it does not really matter. If you can only do 10 minutes to start with, go for 10. Whatever works for you. And I would suggest to slowly add in more minutes. This means you could start with 10 and work your way up to one hour.
Personally, I love to wake up 2 hours before they wake up (Yes, we wake up at 5am voluntarily). This gives me enough time to get dressed, do my make up, have quiet time and just enjoy the morning stillness with a cup of tea.
But what if the kids wake up?!
I can hear your thinking, but what if they wake up early or you accidentally wake them up? Well, we have set a rule in our house that it doesn’t matter if they wake up, as long as they stay in their rooms.
This means our children do not leave their room before 7am. They wake up between 6.30am and 7am and usually go to the toilet as soon as they wake up. And then they go back upstairs, get dressed by themselves and play in their rooms until 7am.
The kids don’t mind and it will give you the opportunity to get things done, even if you wake up just 10 minutes before the kids.
If you don’t know how to start teaching your children to play by themselves, check out this post I did on this topic.
