Why a capsule wardrobe?

Creating a capsule wardrobe for your kids has multiple benefits and reasons.

  • You will spend less money. Reason enough right?! But seriously, things can get crazy really quickly if you don’t have a plan. So having a plan to stick to and to make sure you don’t buy too much is a great way to stay within budget.
  • Your kids will actually wear it all. I don’t know about your kids, but when we have too much clothing (been there, done that) they don’t wear as much and usually pick the same items over and over. It’s basically the same as it is with toys (which I shared about in this post) but when they have too many option, they will get too overwhelmed and it will make them wear the same thing over and over. Just because they don’t know what to choose or where to begin, so they stick to what they know.

So how to start?!

Start by printing your free PDF file with our overview for the capsule wardrobe for kids. Once you have that done, follow these steps and you will have a well functioning wardrobe in a matter of days.

  1. Go through the clothes from the previous season. What can they still wear this season? Anything you can combine with a cardigan to make it work another season? Don’t throw away things you can still use!
  2. Sort through a box you might have saved from last year. Did you store away the sweaters from last year? Check if they can still wear it this year. It has happened a couple times where we had some clothes our kids wore for multiple years. Same with jackets.
  3. Go over the PDF file and see what you still need to purchase.
  4. Write down what you already have and see if you can find a way to make it work better. Maybe you notice that all the short sleeve shirts from Summer can be combined with one dark blue cardigan. Buying that one cardigan can give you multiple new outfits!
  5. Have a shopping day! The fun part! I always turn this into a special day where we just make it fun and go shopping for all the new clothes. The kids love it and can choose what they want.

Now keep in mind; If you want to purchase more than the PDF suggests, then go for it. It’s meant to be a guide, so use it the way it works for your family.
