A lot of people thinks about minimalism as soon as I mention decluttering. But decluttering has nothing to do with minimalism. I am not a minimalist and honestly never could be. I love my little knick knacks! But I DO love to declutter. So let’s talk about decluttering and how it can help you in so many areas of your life. Because the more we can have our home in order, the easier it will be to focus on what is truly important in life.

How decluttering can help

There are so many reasons why getting rid of some things can help you. It truly feels good to just get rid of a ton of things and focus on what you truly need. But there are more reasons, so let’s look at a few of my favorites.

It will give you more mental clarity.

This Is always one that feels kind of funny to me, but it is really true. Having less stuff will give you more clarity! How>1 Well, having less stuff means you have less things to worry about. And that means you can use less brain space for all your stuff. You won’t constantly think about all your things, how you should clean it up or why you really need to get a bigger home for all your things.

Another big perk for us homemakers; less stuff means less things to clean, so a shorter to do list (and that list is often in our head..). A shorter to do list means you have less to worry about.

Decluttering changes your mindset

When you declutter often, it will get you into a different mindset. You begin to realize you don’t need as much as you thought you needed. Plus, it will make you more aware of what you buy and if it is needed. Do you really want this new thing and add clutter to your home?

And not buying as many things is another big reason why declutterring is so effective. Buying less means you can save more money or live on a lower income (which is something we all want as stay at home moms I think). But it also gets us out of the consumerism mindset and makes us more grateful and aware of what we have, instead of what we want/need.

It will give you more time

Now initially it doesn’t really give you more time. Because you have to put in the time to get all the stuff out of the house. But once you have taken your time to declutter, you will have more time on your hands. You have less to clean so more time to do other things!

  • More time with God. One thing I often hear women say is; I don’t have time to read my Bible. Well, first of all I don’t believe that. Because if something is important to you, you make time for it. But it can be hard to make the time for it when you are a busy mom. So if you can declutter and create more time, that is amazing and can help you have more time with the Lord!
  • More time to spend with your kids. When you have to spend less time trying to maintain the home, it will free up so much time you can spend on other things. You can do more craft projects, go outside more often or read books together! So many possibilities!

Decluttering helps to keep the home clean and functional

One thing I have learnt quickly, is that if something doesn’t have a place to store it. It will just move from one place to the other without actually being put away, ever.

So decluttering will help you to have a cleaner but also more functional home. Here’s a few things to keep in mind when you are decluttering:

  • Do not buy more storage unless really necessary. Do not fall for the aesthetically pleasing instagram account about organizing. Just use what you have. I use bins that lost a lid, that have crack that I taped back together, or containers that are a little too small or too big. But buying more storage containers will cost me more money, and I will still have the old ones that I need to store. So do not buy unless you really have to.
  • Make sure everything has a home. For everything you have, you should have a spot in the home where you can store it. That doesn’t have to be a fancy cupboard or beautiful bins, just a spot where you can store it. If you can’t store it anywhere, you might just want to get rid of it.
  • Make sure you know where things go. And not just you, the rest of your family as well. Everybody needs to know where you store the ziplock bags, the bedding and other random items.

It will teach your children

As mothers, we all know that a lot of the things we do, gives a message to our kids. So if we are women that do not take care of the home well, and leave clutter everywhere.. Well, that doesn’t really teach our kids the skills to keep things tidy and clean.

So not only does decluttering and keeping up with it, help you and the family live in a tidy home. It will also teach the children to clean things up after themselves, take good care of their belongings and to keep the home tidy.
