Worldly detachment is such an important and often overlooked topic. But how do you focus more on the Lord and less on the world in this fast moving and busy world?!
This week’s video
What does detachment from the world look like?
Before we dive into the why and how, it is important to look at the what. What does it actually mean to detach from the world?
Detachment is the feeling that you have of not being personally involved in something or of having no emotional interest in it.
So detachment from the world does not mean that you isolate yourself in a cabin in the woods somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Luckily that is not necessary. But what it does mean? It means that you are nog involved or interested in something. And in this case, in the world.
And I personally love how this translates to us as Christians. Because in Romans 12:2 it says that we should not be conformed to this world. And that is exactly what it means to be detached from the world. Yes, we live in this world. But that doesn’t mean we should allow it to influence us, shape us or transform us. That is what the Word should be doing (again, Romans 12:2)
Why it is so important
Being detached from the world is something you will often hear in church. But why is it so important?
First of all I believe we need to detach from the world, because the world has so many, completely different views on how to live life. If you’re not careful, it will teach you things that are contradicting the Bible in many ways. So instead of following the main stream, we need to focus on what the Bible teaches us, what the Holy Spirit tells us and what is biblical.
But another reason you want to detach from the world, is because it will lead you away from the Lord. Not only does it promote things that are not biblical. But when you’re not careful, doing what everyone else does will lead you away from Christ. And that is a very very dangerous road to travel. So instead of thinking we can do both or that we won’t be negatively influenced, be honest with yourself. You cannot live according to the Bible when you are attached to so many things in the world.
In 1 Cor. 15:33 it says: ‘Do not be deceived. Evil company corrupts good habits.’ This is very clear language. If you think it won’t affect you when you are in evil company (whether that is a friend that is always talking against the Bible, or a TV show that talks worldly), it WILL corrupt your good habits. Do not be deceived. We need to constantly focus on the Lord, not the world. Be mindful who you allow to influence you.
Some practical tips
Okay, I can hear you thinking; but Steph, how do I do this? Well, let me share some things that I try to do to keep my mind on the Lord. I am learning with you, so do not think I am perfect at this. But these are some things that help me.
- Make Quiet time a non-negotiable. You can have quiet time in the morning, in the evening, with your daily cup of coffee, etc. But make sure you have time with the Lord.
- Read your Bible everyday. Whether it is one verse, a proverb or following a daily reading plan. Make sure you read your Bible daily. Because we cannot know what the Lord wants us to do, if we don’t read His word!
- Turn off your TV more often. You do not have to throw the TV out the window yet (although you totally can, we did too!) but turn it off more often. Be mindful of what you allow in your home.
- Be intentional with who you follow/watch online. Same as the TV, turn off other things you consume online. Watch less instagram stories, less YouTube videos and dancing TikTok’s. Don’t let the world influence you more than the Word.
- Choose your friends wisely. Proverbs 12:26 says that the righteous man chooses his friends wisely. So be smart and be careful who you allow in your ‘inner circle’. Do not spend time with people who want to pull you away from the Lord and His word. Spend time with like-minded people who show you Christ.
I pray that this helps you to focus on the Lord more and more each day. We are all a work in progress, so don’t be too hard on yourself. Fix your eyes on Jesus and He will help you!
