So we all know that we need to take good care of our homes. But how do we steward the home well with kids to take care of, twenty things on our to-do list every day and people needing us on a daily basis?

Why do we need to talk about this?

We have talked about the importance of being a homemaker many times before, but let’s talk about why we need to steward our homes well.

There are many verses in the Bible that talk about stewardship in a way. It might teach us to do everything as unto the Lord (Col 3:23) or simply say we need to use the gifts we have been given as good stewards of the Lord (1 Peter 4:10)

Many of these verses refer to the fact that whatever we have been given and whatever we need to do, we need to make sure we do it well! And that includes homemaking. So when you have a home and a family to take care of, it is important to not only do what needs to happen, but also to make sure you do it well.

But how do you do that as a busy mother in today’s busy world? Let’s go over some practical tips that will help you steward the home better.

Let’s get practical

  • Wake up earlier. No I am not saying everyone should wake up at 4 am to do a workout, deep clean half the house or whatever crazy thing came to mind. I am suggesting you wake up a little earlier just to make sure you are able to get yourself ready and have a moment to read your Bible before the craziness of the day starts. This can mean 10 minutes extra in the morning that might save your sanity. (Here’s all the reasons why you want to wake up early)
  • Write down a list. Having things written down makes your mind clear and makes it a lot easier to do the tasks.
  • Work with a block schedule system. You probably know by now that I love this system. I explained it in detail here, but it comes down to this; divide your day into smaller blocks and focus on a ‘theme’ in that block. So cleaning could be one block and cooking another. It will help to reduce the stress and still get everything done.
  • Create a meal plan. Meal planning takes away so much stress on a daily basis. You know what meal you are going to make and you have all the ingredients in the fridge. Easy peasy! And having these delicious meals to choose from make it even easier!
  • Focus on small achievements. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time! The same things is true for taking care of what needs to get done. Just do the next thing. Don’t think about all the other things on the list. Just do what’s next.
  • Don’t do more than you can handle. I can give you 30 tips to make things easier, but if you are just putting too much on your plate, you will never feel like you will accomplish everything. And the truth is; you won’t. Don’t do more than you can handle. Maybe it means you need to stay home more often, say no more often or reduce screen time. But doing less is always a great idea!
  • Don’t overcomplicate it. I touched on this earlier, but it truly is important. Don’t overcomplicate things. Just start and do what needs to be done. We often spend so much time thinking about things instead of actually doing it.
